Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The White House withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan backed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against halting the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov said on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would only amount to a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently came ahead of speculation that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
