US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy said.
