Strong winter winds brought walls down upon flimsy tents housing Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. This tragedy highlights the dangerous living conditions that continue after over two years of devastating bombardment and critical shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Provides No Respite from Severe Weather

Although a truce has been active since last fall, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate shelter required to survive frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the dead were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

Separately, the local health authority announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member following the funeral. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, three people of a single household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than five others were hurt in the incident.

Their relatives on Tuesday started removing the debris that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as food and hygiene items throughout Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians live in improvised shelters because their houses were turned into rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Figures Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the administration, says more than four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The authority maintains comprehensive casualty data that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

James Elder, representing the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that at least one hundred children below eighteen years old – sixty boys and 40 girls – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began due to military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, tank shelling and use of bullets. Those figures, he said, represented incidents where sufficient details had been compiled to warrant recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He added that many hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now calls calm would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he concluded.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of more than two million individuals has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and storms at bay while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is badly needed during the colder season. This marks the third cold season after the conflict between the state and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed around 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority says over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
