I believed I nicked it - Alex Carey on review reprieve.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey admitted he believed he had feathered the ball when he was reprieved on Decision Review System on day one of the third Ashes Test against the English.

Having been given a life on 72, Carey proceeded to score a excellent 106 to aid the home side reach 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

What happened?

Australia were 245-6 when Carey looked to play a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.

England lodged a strong appeal, certain they had heard an nick, but umpire Ahsan Raza gave it not out.

Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the replay reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike although this appeared prior to the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he believed there was a space between the bat and the ball.

As a result, Carey was given not out.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," stated Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Controversial 'Snicko'

Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' throughout the series after a series of inconclusive moments.

Bowling coach David Saker hinted England may escalate this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. It is what it is."

Personal Milestone

His hundred was his maiden in the Ashes.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father died in September. Carey's wife was in tears in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by looking to the skies.

"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," said Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm fighting back the tears. It was a fantastic feeling."

Previous Ashes Drama

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, which created a febrile final day.

Regarding the overturned decision he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."
