Israeli citizens mark two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks advance
Citizens have assembled throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the terms of the plan.
A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the talks revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.
Key Points in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home now and until each abducted person come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israelis want the war to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"When the dusk comes, the dread comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, embracing, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Every second we check the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of several people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city indicated additional victims had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the southern area, medical staff stated.
