Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars
He fought the law and justice prevailed.
Two months after getting a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.
Expected Jailing
The found-guilty instigator – who's been subject to house arrest in his estate while a set of court processes and petitions proceed – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, during growing talk that he will be sent to a notorious top-security penitentiary.
Historical Statements on Convicts
Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative ex- soldier displayed minimal compassion for the country's inmates.
“What’s the need to offer these lowlifes a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to wind up in prison, you simply need is not rape, kidnap or theft.”
Prison Location Discussion
But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week visited the facility in an apparent effort to dissuade the high court from banishing him there.
Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, said he predicted the septuagenarian leader to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and feared his location could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal issues – the outcome of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the standard of inmate food.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells accommodating forty detainees: “It's virtually one square metre per detainee.
“We talked to the prisoners and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” continued the senator.
Allies Speak Out
He is not the sole person speaking out prior to the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.
Writing in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the greatest unfairness in its history”.
“It represents an injustice that gnaws the spirits of many of Brazilians,” the former minister said.
Mixed Public Response
That may be accurate due to the substantial backing Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. Yet his expected incarceration has also warmed the spirits of millions others who believe he ought to be imprisoned for planning to block the incoming president from taking power – and even plotting to have him killed.
Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent administration's Workers’ party, stated: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to receive dignified handling – but dignified care behind bars. He must not carry on being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time praising the tough treatment of prisoners, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights should not be for offenders – chosen to visit a penitentiary to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he remarked.
“The former president is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, insulting conduct”.
Likely Prison Conditions
Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently contains about 14,000 detainees, his more likely assigned facility looks to be a close penitentiary for officers and other “particular” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
Its cells are far more adequate than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the impressive leader's home, approximately a short distance away.
As per reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – approximately the size of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and also a minibar in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” sources stated.
Partisan Responses
Senator Lucas denounced the speculated proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his future in the {
