Japan's Economic Output Contracts while Exports Suffer by American Tariffs

The Japanese economic system has shown a decline for the first time in a year and a half, largely driven by falling overseas shipments as a result of recent US trade duties.

Group of Seven Economic Rankings

The Japanese economy stands as the initial G7 country to report an economic contraction in the most recent quarter.

With the United States yet to publish its gross domestic product data for Q3 2025, the present G7 economic leaderboard indicate:

  • The French economy: 0.5 percent expansion
  • United Kingdom: +0.1%
  • Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
  • Germany: 0%
  • Italy: no growth
  • Japan: -0.4%

Tourism Stocks Slump during Political Rift with Beijing

In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is facing an escalating diplomatic tension with China concerning Taiwan.

Stocks in Japan's tourism and consumer businesses have dropped significantly after China urged its nationals to refrain from traveling to Japan.

This action by Chinese authorities intensified a political dispute that was triggered by remarks from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the potential of sending forces in the event of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.

The development led to a wave of sell-offs across Japanese leisure shares.

  • The Tokyo Disneyland operator shares fell by 5.7 percent
  • Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3%
  • The national carrier fell by 3.75%

"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and China's travel warning advising against travel to Japan brings near-term challenges for consumer-facing sectors.

"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, high-end shopping, and hospitality particularly vulnerable."

Economic Decline Details

Japanese gross domestic product dropped by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, as manufacturers' overseas shipments were hit by duties imposed by the US this year.

Exports were a key driver of the decline, dropping by 1.2% compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.

Previously, the American government had proposed Japan with a new 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15% when the two countries concluded a trade agreement.

Private demand also fell, by 0.3% compared to the previous quarter.

On an annual basis, Japan's GDP shrank by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.

"The Japanese economic situation was solid in the first half of this year and today's GDP figures showed that growth is halted temporarily.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be back on a gradual recovery trend going forward."

The US administration has lately acknowledged the effect of tariffs on Americans, lowering duties on imported food products including beef, produce, beverages and bananas amid increasing concerns about rising costs.
