New York Launches Online Platform for Residents to Report Immigration Footage Following Detentions of Four American Citizens
The state AG has introduced a recent reporting form asking locals to provide visual evidence of immigration raids throughout New York. This move comes just a day after a high-profile immigration operation rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking large-scale outcry.
American Citizens Held In Raid
A congressional representative revealed during a news conference that four citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies erupted in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to reside free from terror," the attorney general declared in a release.
"For those who saw and captured federal operations recently, I urge you to provide that material with my office. We are dedicated to assessing these reports and investigating any violations of law."
Form Details
The platform offers fields to upload photos and videos of the operation, along with a section to specify where it occurred. Before submitting, individuals must tick a option that confirms that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or government document."
Information about the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say featured more than 50 government officers, occurred in a well-known neighborhood of the city where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded en masse – typically to visitors.
Footage of the operation show multiple masked and armed federal agents securing and holding a person, and shoving away witnesses. Masses of New Yorkers trailed the agents along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen traveling down the city streets.
Official Reactions
At a Wednesday press conference organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four US citizens were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He said the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," he stated. "This is a armed campaign to incite tension. It is purely a excuse to generate turmoil for this administration to bring in the troops to halt conflict that they themselves caused."
Extensive Outcry
Outrage over the immigration operation escalated – each of the political contenders criticized the operation, as did the state leader.
"Once again, the Trump administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," a political candidate stated.
The city's community groups voiced concern too.
"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, masked agents and protective equipment to go after street vendors working to survive. This operation had no relation to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the agency has said it does not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the start of the existing leadership.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide recently.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations targeting federal operations are commonplace along with claims of force and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a document submitted by civil rights groups alleged inadequate care of pregnant women in detention centers.
