The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with his partner, announced that he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators and Parent Company
The recent development intensifies the continuing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first created several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
