The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
