The Red Devils Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
