The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.

Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
