Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products
As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, according to a company memo shared with employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced widespread backlash for permitting the bulk transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. Yet, the wording has raised questions due to its vagueness. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, theoretically an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.
The Reseller Crisis
For the average collector, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. In recent years, scalpers have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers aim to resell sealed items for a profit, whereas some search for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set is currently selling for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Looking Ahead
This policy change coincides with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the ongoing demand and likely scalper target.
With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will curb bulk purchases and improve availability for true fans and everyday enthusiasts alike.
