What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
