Why the Duke of York Has Relinquished His Royal Honors – and What It Means for the Monarchy
Through a statement released by the royal household, the king's brother has confirmed he is relinquishing his official honors, including the Duke of York. Here is an overview of what has been revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Has the Prince Said?
After previously stepped down as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, the prince has currently decided to “go a step further” and agree not to use the “title or the awards which have been granted to” him.
But he also used the statement to make a point of rejecting – consistent with his past statements – the accusations of misconduct leveled at him; even though after settling a substantial sum to resolve the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he admitted no liability and strongly rejected any claims of wrongdoing.

Nevertheless, it is telling that the prince's announcement said this choice was made “in discussion with the king”. It appears highly likely that, privately, the palace advocated for the move in the hope of cutting Andrew loose.
Why Hasn’t He Been Officially Stripped of All of His Titles?
To forcibly remove a ducal title would require an act of parliament, and would represent such a historic move publicly before the public – it has not happened to a high-ranking royal in over a century – that it would likely cause more harm to the image for the monarchy.
The prince remains a royal by birth. At his birth in 1960, he was automatically as the son of a monarch. This could only be changed if a royal decree was enacted by the king.

Although he stated Giuffre had been “justified” by the move, her sibling Sky Roberts informed the Times that the prince's style ought to be removed for “genuine accountability” to be achieved.
The republican campaign group Republic has also said the action is “too little, too late”, noting: “Andrew remains accused of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be stripped of all titles and his military position and should undergo a criminal investigation. Not using archaic honors is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
